Trailer for Ringo Lam’s Wild City

Ringo Lam returns! Back in the 1990s, he was one of the major names of the Hong Kong film industry, directing realistic, brutal, intense and dark action-thrillers — like Full Alert or City on Fire, the latter one was even an influence for Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs

Through his films, Ringo Lam was revealing the darkest face of Hong Kong. For most of the 2000s, he was a no-show, working on Triangle along with Johnnie To and Tsui Hark, and that’s it.

And here we are! Wild City appears to be exactly what we’ve missed for so long in Hong Kong thrillers, something violent, realistic far from the tear-jerking productions by Dante Lam — who has been one of the few HK directors to create good action-thrillers recently.

Ringo Lam described this project like this, “the theme is about the temptation of money, and how it seduces the protagonists, but also forces them to challenge the plutocracy.” Starring Louis Koo, Shawn Yue…

The trailer puts the focus on the action — car chases with few CGI shots — , while giving clues about the dramatic consequences of characters tempted by money — seems to include characters with different social backgrounds, portraying the whole (wild) city of Hong Kong.

Wild City (formerly known as Hustle) will be released during summer 2015 in Hong Kong.
