The director of Mind Game is back with a short film!
Kick-heart is presented as the “love story between two people that each have a secret to hide. One a pro-wrestler, the other a Nun. Losing never felt so good.”
What happens when independent & creative directors can’t find money to produce their projects? Well, Masaaki Yuasa and his team had an original idea, using the crowdfunding site Kickstarter to gather funds. In one month, they’ve received more than $200,000 from people & fans all over the world to produce Kick-Heart.
While it’s only a 10-min anime short, it’s an interesting move proving that (indie) creators can try new options to produce their ideas — the usual production system of anime in Japan doesn’t leave much room for risks, “such as remakes of older animation projects or well-known established properties” as mentioned on the Kickstarter page of the project!
Anyway, Masaaki Yuasa has found a way to come back, after directing few animated series in the past few years — from Kaiba to Tatami Galaxy, these shows include crazy experimental ideas, with inspiring stories dealing with universal themes, like, what defines who we are, the importance of memories.
Kick-heart will premiere in Japan on May 26th, no release date yet, the film should be submitted to film festivals around the world. By the way, here’s a preview of the original soundtrack;
