From one of the men behind Piano Forest!
Nerawareta Gakuen is about a mysterious transfer student who gains sudden popularity at his new school, using his power of… telepathy.
This is an adaptation of Taku Mayumura’s science fiction novel of the same name, and here comes an interesting fact; Japanese director Nobuhiko Obayashi (you know, the man behind the experimental horror film House) adapted that book in 1981.
That 1981 movie is The Aimed School, filled with Obayashi’s visual madness – psychedelic effects! But no idea how faithful to the book it is – It’s available on english-friendly DVD anyway.
One thing for sure with this animated version, director Ryosuke Nakamura is delivering a gorgeous looking film where the magic of telepathy adds visually something special – maybe too much cherry flowers falling all around though? Will it be enough to make it more than just another high school fantasy romance?
Nerawareta Gakuen (Psychic School Wars) is coming out in Japan on November 10th, 2012.

Correction: Ryosuke Nakamura was only the ‘unit director‘ on Piano Forest—the film was directed by Masayuki Kojima (thanks Jehros)
